UNSW medicine interview: format and dates for 2027 entry
Checked 19 October 2026 by XScrubs

In short
UNSW picks general-entry interviewees by selection rank and UCAT ANZ overall score together, then holds a structured interview with two interviewers, face to face at Kensington. UNSW says about 350 interview places are offered to general-entry applicants each year. Interviews fall in December and January.

The short version
UNSW chooses its general-entry interviewees by combining two numbers, your selection rank and your UCAT ANZ overall score. Shortlisted applicants then attend a structured, face-to-face interview with two interviewers on the Kensington campus (external link). Everything below comes from UNSW's domestic applicants page and UAC's medicine key dates, checked on 19 October 2026 for 2027 entry.
Getting to the interview
UNSW sets minimum selection criteria for general entry. For Year 12 students that is an ATAR or equivalent of 96.00 or above, without Educational Access Scheme adjustments, and a UCAT ANZ percentile of 50 or above (external link), plus an interview if selected. The Rural Entry Admission Pathway sets lower minimums of 91.00 and a UCAT percentile of 40. Applicants who have studied at university have their qualifications assessed differently, and a "best of" rule applies when someone qualifies on both school and tertiary results.
Meeting the minimums does not guarantee an interview. UNSW says only your selection rank and UCAT ANZ overall score decide who is offered an interview, and the highest combined rankings are chosen (external link). The two results are never averaged, so a high mark on one cannot make up for a low mark on the other. UNSW says there are approximately 350 interview places for general-entry applicants each year. UAC adds that selection for interview rests on ATAR and UCAT ANZ overall score, and that about 450 domestic applicants will be interviewed (external link) in total.
The written application
UNSW also asks for a Medicine Application Form, completed through your UAC preference for 428000 by 30 September 2026. UAC says it asks why you want to study medicine at UNSW, your relevant qualities and skills, your non-academic interests and activities, and a brief description of your life experience. UNSW says the form is shared with your interviewers before your interview (external link), so the interview can build on what you wrote. Reread your own answers before the day, and be ready to talk about any example you gave.
The interview
UNSW says the interviews are structured and cross many relevant topics, led by two interviewers drawn from its academic staff, the medical profession or the community. The page does not publish stations, timings or sample questions, so we do not either. All interviews take place in person at Kensington for general entry. Rural applicants meeting the rurality requirements are interviewed in November and, UNSW notes, all of them are offered an interview because academic results are not assessed until later in the year.

UAC supplies these dates from the universities, and they can change, so check your invitation.
Attendance and fairness
If you are shortlisted you must be available during the interview period, or your application does not progress. UNSW says rescheduling is not permitted once an interview is scheduled, although an alternative may be offered if available, and it cannot be guaranteed. Walking into the interview room means you are deemed fit to be interviewed. If you think the selection procedure was applied improperly, you must tell UNSW by email within 24 hours of the event, with precise details.
Preparing
With two interviewers and a written form already in their hands, your best preparation is to be able to explain your reasoning clearly, in your own words, about experiences you have really had. Practise out loud with unfamiliar scenarios, and keep your answers organised: the issue, the people involved, your options, your decision and why. Our free sample and the MMI practice sets are a place to start.
