In short

School leavers reach Sydney medicine through the double degree pathway, which uses an ATAR of 99.95 or equivalent plus an Assessment Day with a group interview plus a written task. Per UAC, the UCAT ANZ is not part of this pathway. Domestic assessment days fall on 18 December 2026 and 18 January 2027.

What this pathway is

The University of Sydney's Doctor of Medicine is a graduate-entry program, so school leavers reach it through the Double Degree Medicine Program (DDMP). The course page (external link) describes a three-year undergraduate degree followed by the four-year MD, and the Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Medicine runs for seven years full time. The page says approximately 30 domestic and 10 international places can be offered each year across both double degrees, and that admission is open only to high school leavers. Students who finish the bachelor's requirements may start the MD without sitting GAMSAT or going through the graduate-entry selection.

Two criteria

Admission rests on two things (external link): a secondary qualification with an ATAR of 99.95 or equivalent, and satisfactory performance in the Assessment Day. The page notes that admission pathways exist for equity and other adjustment factors, including a minimum ATAR of 90 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants and 99.5 for Regional and Remote Entry Scheme or MySydney applicants. UAC records that the UCAT ANZ is not needed on this pathway (external link). You must meet the ATAR to be invited to an assessment day at all, and the page says special consideration does not waive the ATAR or the assessment, whatever difficulties you faced during school.

What the Assessment Day involves

Invitations only go out once ATARs or other secondary results have been released, and only to applicants who are eligible. The page says the assessment will be conducted online and has two parts, a group interview and a written assessment (external link). It does not publish the format of either part, so we do not describe it. UAC states that eligible domestic applicants are required to attend in person, while describing the days as online assessment days. The course page, which is the university's own, gives a Zoom link in its timeline, so follow your invitation and check which applies. The university stresses that dates are not negotiable: the first assessment day that follows the release of your results is the one you attend.

Dates (for 2027 entry; the university says they may change)

  • UAC applications open on 8 April 2026, and early-bird applications close on 30 September 2026.
  • Domestic Assessment Day 1: preference deadline 13 December 2026, ATARs released and invitations emailed after 9am on 16 December, RSVP by 2pm on 17 December, then a second email with the Zoom link after 3pm, assessment on Friday 18 December 2026. Offers follow in UAC December Round 2 on 23 December.
  • Domestic Assessment Day 2: preference deadline 10 January 2027, invitations after 9am on 14 January, RSVP by 2pm on 15 January, assessment on Monday 18 January 2027. Offers follow in UAC January Round 2 on 21 January 2027.
  • Applicants whose IBAS results are released on 18 December 2026 are invited to Assessment Day 2.

If your results are not available in time for the January 2027 invitations, you may be eligible to apply for the 2028 intake. You are only eligible for the first intake after your final results.

Rules and conduct

The page sets out several conditions. Deferral of enrolment is considered only in exceptional circumstances, with a request and documents within 14 days of the offer letter. There is no credit or exemption for earlier tertiary study. Sydney Medical School reserves the right to reject or cancel an offer where conduct before enrolment makes an applicant unsuitable, with examples such as not treating university staff and others with respect and courtesy, or not acting honestly and ethically in dealings with them. Before starting the MD, students must comply with requirements for entering NSW Health facilities. The page also asks you to read the inherent requirements for the course before applying.

Preparing

A written task and a group interview both reward clear, balanced thinking: state a position, give reasons, acknowledge another view, and listen to others in a group without taking over. Since the university does not publish the exact format, practise the general skills rather than a guessed routine. Our free sample and the MMI practice sets are one place to start.
