UWA Doctor of Medicine MMI: eight stations and ranking
Checked 19 October 2026 by XScrubs

In short
UWA runs a domestic MMI of eight numbered stations of seven minutes each, with two minutes to consider the question and five with the interviewer. School leaver ranking gives interview the biggest share, half, with ATAR on 30 and UCAT ANZ on 20 per cent. Interviews fall between 30 November and 11 December 2026.

How school-leaver entry works at UWA
UWA's route is different from most. According to the Doctor of Medicine course page (external link), a successful school leaver receives a conditional place in the Doctor of Medicine (MD), and that place depends on completing UWA's Bachelor of Biomedicine (Specialised) and reaching a minimum selection GPA of 5.5 within the first two years. Domestic school leaver entry is competitive and is based on ATAR or equivalent, UCAT ANZ score and an interview. Applications go through TISC, and UWA says they close in late September. The page lists a minimum ATAR of 98 for the Rural, Broadway and High Academic Achiever pathways and 90 for applicants eligible for the Indigenous school leaver pathway, and notes that Broadway, Educational Access Scheme and Uway adjustments are taken into account.
The UCAT ANZ at UWA
You must sit the UCAT ANZ in the year you apply, and a score cannot be carried over. UWA uses the overall score the Consortium produces by adding the cognitive subtests, and it says it reserves the right to use the Situational Judgement score in selection (external link) although that section is not part of the overall score at present. Invitations to interview are based on UCAT ANZ performance within each quota. There is no fixed minimum score, because the cut-off is set each year by how applicants rank. UWA does not publish earlier years' minimums, saying they do not meaningfully predict what will happen to future applicants. It also states that it does not recommend or endorse commercial admissions test courses.
The domestic interview
The domestic MMI follows a precise structure. Registration and the interview together take about 70 to 75 minutes (external link). There are eight numbered stations, each built around one question. You move through them in order and meet a different interviewer at each. Each station lasts seven minutes: two minutes alone to consider the question and five minutes speaking with the interviewer. Questions are given in writing, and follow-up questions are possible but not guaranteed, and interviewers need not read the question aloud.
UWA lists the attributes it assesses: accountability, ethical and moral judgement, communication, management skills, problem solving, self-awareness, teamwork and collaboration, conflict resolution, empathy and resilience. Its guidance on the questions is useful to read in full:
- They come from a large pool and may be rotated between interviews.
- They are designed to make you think broadly and explain your reasoning.
- Interviewers are trained to assess what you actually said in response to each question.
- There is no single correct answer. They want you to explain and back up your opinions.
- No specific health care or scientific knowledge is needed, though some awareness of what these careers involve helps.
Interviewees and interviewers both agree to a statement of confidentiality as a condition of taking part. International applicants go through a different process: a panel of two interviewers, roughly 50 minutes, and usually five MMI-style questions.
Dates
- TISC applications close in late September 2026.
- Interview eligibility is emailed after the WACE exams finish.
- Domestic school leaver interviews are expected on chosen dates between 30 November and 11 December 2026. (external link) UWA says the dates can shift, and only some dates inside that range will be offered.
- Candidates who cannot attend within the dates they are offered cannot be guaranteed another date.
- Offers follow TISC timelines.
How the final ranking works
For school leavers, UWA gives interview half the weight, ATAR or equivalent takes 30 per cent, and UCAT ANZ takes the last 20. (external link) A separate split applies to rural applicants: interview 37.5 per cent, rurality rating 25 per cent, ATAR 22.5 per cent and UCAT ANZ 15 per cent. Interview carries the most weight in both. School leavers may defer an offer for one year, or up to two years if they have national service obligations.
Preparing
UWA's advice on preparation is specific: practise reading a short question quickly, spot the key issues, and time how long you need to plan. It says the interviewer wants to hear your own thinking and that the difference from rehearsed material can be apparent. Practise the two-minute plan and the five-minute answer.
