In short

UQ selects provisional-entry school leavers for interview by UCAT ANZ aggregate score through QTAC, then runs a multiple mini-interview by Zoom in the middle and end of November 2026. Its briefing pack describes eight stations with two minutes of silent reading and seven minutes to respond. Graduate entry through GEMSAS has a separate invitation and booking process.

Two pathways, two ways in

UQ's Doctor of Medicine can be entered by more than one route, and the steps differ. School leavers in the Greater Brisbane provisional entry pathway apply through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) (external link) using codes 721302 for a Commonwealth supported non-bonded place and 721402 for a bonded place. You do not need to apply for a preferred undergraduate degree at that point, because UQ says it will contact you about that if you receive an offer. Graduate-entry applicants come through GEMSAS, the graduate medical admissions service, and UQ's interview page (external link) says they must accept their interview invitation in the GEMSAS portal and then book a time directly with UQ. Both steps have to be completed to secure the booking. Read the instructions for your own pathway, since the two are easy to mix up.

How interviews are chosen

For provisional entry, applicants are selected for interview on UCAT ANZ aggregate score (external link) once QTAC has confirmed they meet the minimum entry requirements. UQ states that the UCAT ANZ recently changed its testing methodology, that the calculation of the aggregate used to pick interviewees is still under review, and that an update will follow. It adds that it does not consider UCAT annotations. Invitations arrive through your QTAC account and may appear as a prompt to check your application. Interviews are planned for the middle and end of November 2026 (external link). After the interviews you are ranked for offer alongside other applicants. Because the two provisional streams can be preferenced separately, you are ranked in merit order for each stream and receive an offer to the highest preference for which you are competitive.

What the interview looks like

UQ describes a multiple mini-interview with several stations and a different assessor at each, with each assessor giving a score that contributes to your admissions rank (external link). The format is by video conference. UQ's pre-interview briefing pack (external link) (its 2026 edition) goes much further than the web page:

  • You join a Zoom waiting room at your allocated time. Once admitted, you are under exam conditions, and late arrivals are not permitted to proceed.
  • Your first interviewer checks your government-issued photo ID, or student ID for provisional entry applicants. You then show your surroundings, including your desk, with a movable camera. A desktop computer therefore needs an external webcam you can move.
  • Each station starts with two minutes of silent reading. You may not read the scenario aloud. The interviewer then stops sharing the scenario and you have seven minutes to respond. A message appears at the six-minute mark to warn you of one minute remaining.
  • There are about one-minute transitions between stations. The pack says applicants complete eight scenarios. Some rounds include a virtual waiting room, which is not an extra scenario.
  • If you finish early, you and the interviewer sit in silence until time runs out. If you are still talking when time ends, you stop at once.

Rules to prepare for

The pack requires you to sit in a quiet place where you are alone for up to two hours, with only Zoom open on your device. It permits a single device, water, government-issued ID and any item required for medical purposes, which must be cleared in advance. It does not permit writing utensils, paper, timers, other devices, smart watches or recording devices, and it keeps books, clocks and extra screens out of reach. Your hands must be visible, and you may not take notes, record or take screenshots. The pack also asks you to switch off Zoom's gesture recognition so that on-screen reactions do not look like a prohibited action. You agree to keep the content of the interview confidential.

Practical points

UQ says smartphones can be used only in special circumstances because scenarios are hard to read on a small screen. Reasonable adjustments must be requested before the interview, as they cannot be arranged on the day. UQ also runs an optional online briefing session, which is not recorded, and shows an example virtual MMI (external link) on its page.

Preparing

Practise reading a short scenario silently for two minutes, planning, then speaking for a full seven. Time yourself, and practise leaving a pause rather than filling it. Our free sample and the MMI practice sets are one place to try.

Common questions

How does UQ choose who to interview?
For provisional entry, by UCAT ANZ aggregate score. UQ notes that the UCAT ANZ recently changed its testing methodology and that the aggregate calculation for choosing interviewees is under review. UQ does not consider UCAT annotations.
Is the UQ MMI online?
Yes. It runs by Zoom on a computer or tablet that meets UQ's requirements, with a movable camera for a room check.
How is the process different for graduates?
UQ's page says graduate-entry applicants accept their interview invitation in the GEMSAS portal and then book a time with UQ. Provisional-entry school leavers apply through QTAC and are invited through their QTAC account, then book directly with UQ.
