In short

Adelaide University invites applicants to interview on UCAT ANZ ranking alone, then runs an online MMI over Zoom with at least six ten-minute stations and one interviewer each. Offers split their weight between interview and academic score (40 per cent each) and UCAT ANZ (20 per cent). The university discourages reciting rehearsed responses.

How Adelaide chooses people for interview

Adelaide University ranks applicants on their UCAT ANZ results and invites those who rank highly enough to an interview (external link). Interview invitations do not consider your academic record. For most applicants, interview eligibility rests on the first three UCAT ANZ subtests, which have equal weight. The Situational Judgement section is used only to separate candidates in the lower ranks who have an equal total across the other three. If you apply for more than one program that needs a UCAT ANZ score, eligibility is assessed separately for each. Qualifying for the Bachelor of Medical Studies, Dental Surgery or Oral Health earns you one interview that covers all the programs you are eligible for. Your eligibility is judged on the preferences you hold when SATAC applications close, so later changes do not count.

The university says approximately 600 applicants will be invited (external link), and at least half of the school leavers invited will be from South Australia. If you are not invited, your application to the medical program does not progress, and special consideration requests about UCAT scores are declined. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathway applicants do not need to sit the UCAT ANZ and are all invited to interview.

Before that: the minimum requirements

To be considered, applicants must meet at least one minimum entry requirement, fulfil the prerequisites, sit the UCAT ANZ and attend an interview if invited. The page lists, for example, a secondary qualification with an adjusted ATAR-equivalent selection rank of 90.00 or higher, and a Higher Education pathway with at least ten reserved places. You apply through the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC) and may list up to six preferences, with the bonded and non-bonded medical places each using a preference. Your UCAT ANZ identification number and the email address you used to register must match your SATAC application, or your application will not progress.

Booking

If you are eligible, you book through the Admissions@Adelaide system (external link). Timeslots are offered first come, first served. You must enter correct details, such as your SATAC ID and date of birth, and declare any conflict of interest if a relative, friend, colleague, neighbour or teacher is involved with the interviews. You can cancel and rebook while the system is open. Once it closes, requests to reschedule are not considered, for reasons such as not checking your eligibility, clashes with other universities or system issues. Medical or compassionate reschedules can be requested within 24 hours of the original interview, with documentation. Times are in Adelaide time, and arriving late because of a time zone miscalculation is not grounds for appeal.

What the interview is like

Interviews use a multiple mini-interview built from scenarios and questions across at least six stations of ten minutes each, with one interviewer per station (external link). Interviewers complete a training program and may include university staff, alumni of the medical program, health professionals and community members. All interviews are held online over Zoom. (external link) In-person, telephone and other platforms are not available. The university lists what it assesses: motivation, cultural awareness, integrity, empathy, teamwork, communication, problem solving and how prepared you are for the program.

You must be somewhere private, you may not communicate with anyone during the interview and you may not take or use notes of any kind. A breach can cancel the interview and make you ineligible for an offer. The page adds that interviews are reviewed after each cycle, so content and conduct may change from one year to the next.

What Adelaide says about preparation

Adelaide encourages you to prepare, but discourages reciting rehearsed responses (external link), and says that rehearsed rather than natural replies can diminish your overall performance. It also says it does not endorse any commercially available interview preparation courses. We sell practice, so take that into account, and think of practice as a way to get comfortable thinking aloud rather than as a script. Our free sample and the MMI practice sets are a place to try.
