University of Auckland MBChB MMI: an online recorded format
Checked 19 October 2026 by XScrubs

In short
Auckland's general MMI is held online on the Kira Talent platform in a recorded format, with eight stations of three and a half minutes, of which seven are assessed. Each assessed station gives 30 seconds to read and three minutes to respond. The 2026 session on 8 September selects students who start in 2027, and Casper replaces UCAT ANZ from 2028 entry.

Why the dates look different from Australia
Auckland's cycle runs a year ahead of how Australian pages are labelled. The 2026 MMI described on the university's page, held on 8 September 2026, was part of the selection for places that start in March 2027. So the page you can read today is the right one for "2027 entry". The same program page says entry criteria change for 2028 entry (external link), and the application closing date it lists for Semester One 2028 is 1 July 2027. Keep that in mind when you read any Auckland date.
Who can apply, and the numbers
Entry into the MBChB is limited and competitive, with 317 domestic places each year (external link). There are two application categories: First Year entry from the Bachelor of Health Sciences or the Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science), and Graduate Entry. A school leaver cannot go straight into the MBChB and is pointed to First Year entry instead. First Year entry is a one-time application, made in the same year as the qualifying study.
For 2027 entry, First Year applicants need a minimum GPA of 6.0 across seven specified first-year courses, with no fails, to be considered for an interview, and they must also pass a foundations course. Those who are interviewed are ranked for an offer on a weighting of GPA in four courses (60 per cent), UCAT ANZ final score (15 per cent) and the MMI (25 per cent). The program page says that for 2027 entry the UCAT ANZ has to be sat during the year you apply. From 2028 entry it says Auckland's own situational judgement test, Casper, takes its place, and the weighting becomes MMI 50 per cent and Casper 50 per cent, with a minimum threshold for the MMI. Domestic graduate entry needs a GPA of at least 6.0 (B+) from a New Zealand university qualification completed within five years.
The general MMI
The MMI is compulsory (external link) for the MBChB and several other clinical programmes, and it assesses non-academic qualities. The university lists, among others: oral English fluency, communication, resilience and adaptability, commitment to self-reflection and lifelong learning, leading and contributing in groups, awareness of the health profession, empathy, social responsibility, and commitment to safe, inclusive and equitable health care for communities in Aotearoa New Zealand, including Māori, Pacific peoples, rainbow communities, disabled people and refugees.
All 2026 general MMIs were held online on one day (external link), with every applicant completing the interview at the same time, and an applicant who cannot take part in their scheduled interview is not considered further. The format is asynchronous and video recorded on the Kira Talent platform. There are eight stations of three and a half minutes each. Seven are assessed, each built around one domain, with 30 seconds to read the question and three minutes to respond. The eighth is administrative and covers ID verification and child safety requirements. Applicants can try the platform between receiving the invitation and the interview.
What you need on the day
The university lists (external link): a photo to upload, two forms of ID, a computer or laptop with a webcam and microphone (a mobile phone cannot be used), stable internet and a quiet room where you are alone with the door closed. It is a closed interview, so no books, prepared notes, phones, recording devices, extra technology or watches are allowed, though a clear drink bottle is. You may take handwritten notes on paper during the 30-second preparation time. A limited number of rooms and laptops can be borrowed from the library.
Adjustments and afterwards
Requests for reasonable accommodations had a deadline of 1 July 2026 (external link), and the page says that late requests cannot be guaranteed. After the MMIs, scores are combined with other elements, such as final GPA and UCAT where applicable, and applicants are ranked in their categories. Offers are expected in late December. Student support advisers are available afterwards to talk through the experience, and they are not part of the admissions process and cannot comment on your chances.
Preparing
With three minutes per answer, clarity matters more than detail. Practise reading a short prompt in 30 seconds, then speaking for three minutes without notes, and watch your recording the way an assessor would. Our free sample and the MMI practice sets are a place to begin.
